But as of June 4, 2001, it became official: The Milwaukee Admirals moved to their third league affiliation in their three decades of existence - the American Hockey League, for the 2001-2002 season.

The Admirals technically came into the AHL as an expansion team. However, they were allowed to keep their name, and managed to win their first encounter with the "other" Admirals team, Norfolk, in December of 2001.
